Choosing a Wedding Ring

  • The most up to date, achingly fashionable designs will be the fastest to date and end up seeming rather old fashioned. Instead look for more timeless designs. Remember that you'll be wearing that ring for the rest of your life!
  • Don't fall too completely for a wedding ring before you have seen it on your hand. Certain rings will suit some people more than others. Look for designs that look in proportion to your hand.
  • Follow your instincts! If you don't like a ring at first glance, don't allow any sales person, or your partner to persuade you otherwise.
  • For a truly bespoke and unique wedding ring, you could always design your own in collaboration with a jeweller or ring designer.
  • Consider your occupation and hobbies. If you work with your hands you may need a chunkier and more durable band, or you may need to be able to take it off easily. Discuss this with your jeweller.
  • Consider all options. The main metals used for wedding rings are yellow gold, white gold and platinum. A more recent addition to this field is titanium. Platinum and titanium are the most durable. Higher carat gold rings are more expensive, and softer, so less durable.
  • If you are planning to wear both an engagement and a wedding ring on the same finger, then you need to make sure they sit well together both physically and aesthetically.
  • If you are spending ££££ on a wedding ring, then getting it insured is a must. Loosing wedding rings is alarmingly common!
  • Internet Vs High Street Jeweller. There are some wedding band bargains available online, but the advise and experience of a high street jeweller can be extremely helpful, plus you can check that the ring definitely fits!
  • Size Vs quality. When it comes to diamonds on a tight budget, would you prefer a larger, lower quality diamond, or a smaller, higher quality one?
  • The importance of research. There's a wealth of information out there and jewellery is a competitive field. Good research and thorough price comparison will not just result in a beautiful ring, but will ensure that you pay a fair price for it. If you've never heard of the 4Cs (carat, clarity, colour and cut), then you definitely haven't done enough research!
